Finding Your Perfect Job

Whether you’ve been on a sabbatical, caring for your family, or pursuing further education, finding the right job can be a challenging, frustrating and long journey. In this blog, we’ll explore strategies and tactics to help you not only search for the right job but also stay positive and resilient through the process.

1. Self-Reflection and Goal Setting

Before diving into the job search, take some time for self-reflection. What are your skills, passions, and values? What kind of work would make you excited to get out of bed in the morning? Setting clear goals and understanding your motivations will help you focus your job search in the right direction.

2. Update Your Skills

If you’ve been out of work for a few years, or changing career, you be might required to brush up on your skills. Consider taking courses, attending workshops, or pursuing certifications in your field. Not only will this make you more marketable, but it will also boost your self-confidence.

3. Networking is Key

Reach out to your professional network. Let former colleagues, mentors, and friends know that you’re back in the job market. Attend industry events, join LinkedIn groups, and connect with professionals in your desired field. Networking can open doors, provide valuable insights, and keep you informed about job opportunities.

4. Craft an Outstanding Resume

Your resume is your first impression on potential employers. Tailor it to highlight your skills, experiences, and achievements relevant to the job you are applying for. Have one CV for each and every type of job you are applying for so that it is specific and highlights the relevant skills and experience. Don’t be afraid to emphasise transferable skills you’ve gained during your break, such as time management, problem-solving, and adaptability; just don’t include “managing a busy household” as everyone believes they do this and usually gets a “so what” response.

6. Stay Positive

Job hunting can be challenging, and rejection is a part of the process. You will, I’m sorry say, will receive more rejections that job offers. But so does everyone. Stay positive by focusing on your accomplishments, setting realistic expectations, and by setting yourself a project. This could be learning how to bake or knit, doing some volunteer work, re-wilding the garden, or anything else that will enable you to feel productive and like you’ve accomplished something regularly. You should also surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family and The Returners’ Tribe who can boost your morale during difficult times.

7. Persevere and Adapt

Job searching is often a marathon, not a sprint. Don’t get discouraged by rejection or slow progress. Instead, view each setback as an opportunity to learn and grow. Every interview is a rehearsal. Adapt your strategy as needed, and remember that persistence is often the key to success.

8. Practice Interviewing

Brush up on your interview skills by practicing with a friend or coach. Be ready to discuss your career gap confidently, emphasising what you’ve learned and how it makes you a stronger candidate. Practice answering common interview questions and develop compelling stories to showcase your skills.
